Clear benefits of Botox®
The most recognizable benefits of cosmetic neuromodulator Botulinum Toxin A (Dysport® or BOTOX® Cosmetic) procedure, are to relax the muscles that cause fine facial line and wrinkles and achieve a more youthful looking appearance. This non-surgical procedure is available in our Lethbridge clinic.
Things you should know
Before booking your consultation with one of our Doctors, here are some of the things you should know about Dysport® or BOTOX® Cosmetic.
- Repeated contracting of our facial muscles form creases on top of the skin. Over time, these creases can deepen. As we age, collagen naturally depletes from our cells, which contribute to the deepening of the lines and wrinkles. With cosmetic treatments, it’s never too late to bring back youthful looking skin. Our practice can help treat the frown lines (forehead wrinkles) and crow’s feet that have developed over years. In just a few days after treatment, you’ll see wrinkles start to smooth.
- Chronic clenching and grinding (bruxism) may be something that you do when you sleep, causing you to wake up with pain or headaches. The jaw pain associated with this condition is due to the muscles becoming overused. To relax the jaw or facial muscles so that they can recover (or avoid over-flexing,) Botox® Therapeutic treatment can be extremely effective. Our clinic can safely provide Botox® Therapeutic injections right here in our practice.
How long does it take?
Cosmetic injection appointments only take a few minutes and no anesthesia is required. Dysport® or BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected with a fine needle into specific muscles. It generally takes three to fourteen days to take full effect and it is best to avoid alcohol during and after treatment. Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications should be stopped before treatment as well to reduce potential bruising.
Downside to Botox®
The effects from Dysport® or BOTOX® Cosmetic will last three to six months. As the muscle action gradually returns, lines and wrinkles begin to re-appear and will need to be re-treated. The lines and wrinkles often appear less severe with time because the muscles are being trained to relax.
Temporary bruising is the most common side effect of Dysport® or BOTOX® Cosmetic. Headaches, which resolve in 24-48 hours, can occur, but this is rare. A small percentage of patients may develop eyelid drooping or Ptosis. This usually resolves in a few weeks. This usually happens when the Dysport® or BOTOX® Cosmetic moves around, so you shouldn't rub the treated area for 12 hours after injection or lay down for three to four hours.
Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a neurological disease should not use Dysport® or BOTOX® Cosmetic. Anyone with a severe Milk Allergy is asked to use BOTOX® Cosmetic instead of Dysport®, as there can be a reaction to the binding agent used in the purification process. Neuromodulators don’t work for all wrinkles, a consultation with your doctor is recommended.
